Key Points:

  • President Donald Trump plans to raise tariffs on European cars and trucks to 25% next week.
  • The current 15% rate stems from the Turnberry Deal negotiated last July in Scotland.
  • European officials claim they honor the deal and accuse the United States of breaking trade rules.
  • The tariff hike threatens major German auto manufacturers like Volkswagen, BMW, and Audi.

President Donald Trump dropped a bombshell on Friday. He announced he will raise tariffs on cars and auto parts coming from the European Union. He claims the 27-nation group failed to keep its promises from a major trade agreement they signed last summer.

Trump took to his Truth Social platform to share the news. He stated that he would increase the tariffs on European cars and trucks entering the United States to exactly 25%. He blamed the hike on the European Union not complying with their fully agreed trade deal. The new tax rates will take effect next week.

Right now, the United States taxes European automobiles and parts at 15%. This rate comes directly from the Turnberry Deal. Trump and European leaders struck this agreement last July at his golf resort in Scotland. The deal laid out strict terms for both sides. The European Union agreed to lower its tariff rates on American industrial goods. They also promised to buy $750 billion worth of American energy and invest another $600 billion in the United States. In return, the American government offered lower import taxes.

This sudden threat completely contradicts recent diplomatic meetings. Just last week, top European trade official Maroš Šefčovič flew to Washington. He met with members of the Trump administration and left feeling very confident. Šefčovič told reporters that US Ambassador Jamieson Greer reassured him that the deal remained solid. He emphasized that both sides considered the terms of the deal fundamental and expected full implementation.

Despite those positive talks, tension clearly bubbles under the surface. European leaders feel extremely frustrated. They hate that the United States continues to impose heavy steel and aluminum tariffs on hundreds of their products. On the other side, American officials feel angry about the slow pace of European politics. They want the European Union to implement the end-of-July deal much faster.

The European Parliament actually passed legislation in March to lower tariffs on American goods. However, the political process in Europe is slow. The bloc still needs to negotiate the final details with its member capitals and the European Commission. They aim to finish everything and make it official by June.

Bernd Lange, a German Social Democrat and chair of the International Trade Committee in the European Parliament, released a furious statement on Friday. He called President Trump’s behavior completely unacceptable. Lange insisted that Europe honor the Scotland agreement. He then accused the United States of repeatedly breaking the rules. He pointed out that the US currently imposes tariffs on over 400 European products containing steel and aluminum, with an average tariff of 26%.

Lange did not stop there. He said this latest threat proves the United States is a totally unreliable partner. He reminded everyone about recent arbitrary attacks from the US concerning Greenland, saying close partners do not treat each other this way. Lange promised that Europe would respond with ultimate clarity and firmness, using the full strength of its economic position.

Trump issues these specific auto tariffs under Section 232 of the US trade law. This section allows the president to target specific industries for national security reasons. Back in February, the Supreme Court overturned some of Trump’s other tariffs. However, that ruling did not affect his Section 232 powers. This legal loophole gives his administration broad flexibility to raise duties on the auto sector whenever he wants, quickly.

These auto tariffs serve as Trump’s biggest weapon. The threat of heavy car taxes originally forced the European Union to the bargaining table last summer. The new 25% tariff will place massive pressure directly on Germany’s signature automobile industry. Major global brands like Volkswagen, BMW, and Audi now face a very difficult and expensive future in the American market.
